People spend time and money to improve different aspects of their look: skin, hair, nails, and teeth...But what about your Gums?

A very new area of dentistry is the use of antioxidants for the oral environment. Antioxidants for the mouth can help in the healing of multiple inflammatory processes we see every day at our office.

Antioxidants help with the elimination of free radicals and inhibit cell destruction. Antioxidants have been around in other areas of medicine for years.

If there is one downside to red wine, it's stained teeth -- that purple-grey coating that is a dead giveaway you've had one too many. Other dark beverages, like coffee and grape juice can stain teeth too, but none do it quite as dramatically as wine.
So what gives?
"There are three things that influence the staining of teeth," says Dr. Mark Wolff, a professor at NYU's College of Dentistry. "The first is the intensity of color, or chromogen. In red wine, that red is very intense."
But that's just the start of it.
Dr. Thomas Connelly, a HuffPost contributor and cosmetic dentist, explains that because wine is acidic, it actually dissolves -- or etches -- teeth at the microscopic level. This etching process makes the tooth's surface, which is normally smooth, more likely to accept pigment.
Which is why it's actually possible for white wine to stain teeth, too. Teeth don't necessarily soak up any color from the beverage itself, but because they're "etched," they are more likely to pick up the color of whatever you're eating or drinking at the same time.
The third and final part of the equation are the tannins in wine.

There are several contributing factors and and many pathogenic bacteria that can cause gum disease. Oral DNA Labs now offer a salivary diagnostic test that we can use to accurately find and treat the specific cause or causes of your disease. There are two tests we can do. Both are done in our office and are quick, non-invasive, and painless. The first, MyPerioPath, identifies which of thirteen commonly associated bacteria are causing your infection and how numerous they are; many times, more than one bacterial presence is to blame. The second test, MyPerioID, uses genetic markers to determine if you are more susceptible than most people to gum tissue infections.

Ask about Oral DNA tests if you have been diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease or you have any of the following indicators:
• Inflamed, red, or bleeding gum tissue
• Bone loss evidenced by periodontal pockets or x-rays
• Family history of periodontal disease
• Smoking or history of smoking
• Other conditions, such as diabetes, that increase your susceptibility
• Certain medications, such as asthma inhalers or steroids
• Chronic bad breath
• Loose teeth

Oral Cancer on the Tongue

It's unfortunate, it seems like every month is attached to some form of Cancer. As you may know by now April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. This awareness is not meant to scare you. It is really to make you aware of a particular Cancer and what prevention can do to help you stay ahead of the game.

Fortunately, those who are diagnosed in the early stages of the disease do very well in treatment and recovery. Unfortunately, a vast majority of oral cancer victims are diagnosed in the later stages, where long-term survival is less likely. Statistics show that an American dies from Oral Cancer every hour.

There are certain risks factors that can dramatically increase the chances of Oral Cancer, including drinking and smoking regularly.

The VELscope system helps dental professionals visualize abnormalities in the mucosal tissues of your lips, mouth and upper throat. In just two minutes a painless VELscope examination lets us improve our assessment of your overall oral health.

My commitment to your dental health goes beyond a nice smile. That’s why I have always had a visual oral cancer screening incorporated in my regular exam. This year, I added the VELscope Vx system to my exams. The New Velscope Vx was FDA approved in October of 2010. The VELscope's blue light "excites" molecules (called "fluorophores") deep within the layers of oral tissues. In turn, those fluorophores emit their own light (fluorescence), in shades of green, yellow and red. The VELscope's filter makes fluorescence visualization possible, by blocking reflected blue light, and by enhancing the contrast between normal and abnormal tissue. It is a painless technique that helps find tissue abnormalities, including cancerous and precancerous lesions earlier. The best way to help improve survival rates of oral cancers is early detection and treatment.

Are You Too Sensitive

We’ve all noticed it from time to time – have some ice cream followed by good hot coffee and OUCH! – your tooth is telling you not to do that! According to The Academy Of General Dentistry, over 45 million Americans experience this on a frequent basis. But how do you know if your tooth sensitivity is a sign of (pardon the pun) a deep rooted problem? Let’s start with a little quiz. What is the hardest substance in the human body? a) Fingernails b) The thigh bone, also known as the femur c) Your hard-headed uncle’s skull d) Tooth enamel If you guessed tooth enamel, you’re not only on your way to a winning appearance on Jeopardy but you’re ready to understand tooth sensitivity. The enamel that covers your teeth is an extremely hard substance and acts as a great protectant. Inside the enamel is something called dentin, which is a bit softer and actually has small hollow tubes leading right into the nerve chamber. Irritate that layer and your tooth will let you know! So if the enamel on your teeth is worn away, sensitivity can set in. The roots of your teeth are in a similar situation, and receding gums which cause the roots to be uncovered can cause sensitivity as well. So what can you do? First of all, be gentle when you brush and always use a soft toothbrush. Lots of pressure and stiff bristles don’t clean your teeth any better and actually can wear away enamel and gums. Some people find that acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes can cause sensitivity, so avoid those if you are in that category. Also, there are over-the-counter products, such as special toothpastes and rinses, that can help. Let us know and we’ll be glad to recommend the right one for you. Unfortunately, many of the causes of tooth sensitivity are also signs of much larger dental problems. Things such as cavities, defective fillings or crowns, receding gums due to gum disease, grinding, and many other conditions can cause sensitivity and all of these things definitely need attention from a dental professional. Some people try to save money on dental care simply by purchasing only inexpensive, low quality toothbrushes and toothpastes and not replacing them as often as necessary - or worse, not going to the dentist at all. Others, however, take a completely different approach.

For example, some who are looking to SAVE on dental care will complete treatment as recommended by their dentist (I know you were hoping for a better tip). Unfortunately, it is a fact of life that problems do not resolve themselves but only continue to get worse when left untreated. The best advice I can give is to try and look at the long term price of doing nothing, not only financially but quality of life as well. When able, keeping your natural teeth is by far the most cost effective way of saving on your dental care. However, it is wonderful how far dentistry has come in the ways of replacing a missing tooth. The dental implant is the only way to create a permanent replacement for a lost tooth that will look, feel and have the same cleaning care as your natural tooth.
